Ramarao Annavarapu was born in Guntur AP and educated in Nagpur, Maharastra. After teaching for three years, he joined the Indian Railways Traffic Service and worked in different capacities on Indian Railways. He retired as Chief Operations Manager, Eastern Railway, Kolkata in 1991. He has visited several countries including USA, UK, Europe, Nepal, Singapore, Indonesia and Ghana, West Africa.
Ramarao started writing while working for railways and published several articles on varied subjects, including translation of poems and songs of Rabindranath Tagore and others. So far, he has published two collections of short stories and two books on railway history, apart from translation of a set of stories from Telugu. He writes a regular column in the Raiders' Guardian, a quarterly publication of All India Retired Railway Officers' Association, Hyderabad. He lives in Bangalore since 2024.
